From September 15 to 21, Art Box Experience at Norblin Factory will offer a whole new way to discover Malta. The exhibition “Stop! Open Your Eyes to Malta” will take visitors on a journey through thousands of years of history, Maltese heritage, art, cuisine and everyday life. Images, sound, scents, interactive installations and VR technology will make Malta not only something to see, but above all something to experience. Admission is free.
Malta is a small archipelago in the heart of the Mediterranean, covering just 316 km² yet home to an extraordinary wealth of history and culture. It is here that megalithic temples can be found that are older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Three sites – Valletta, the Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum and the megalithic temples – are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The “Stop! Open Your Eyes to Malta” exhibition has been designed as a multisensory journey through the different layers of Maltese identity. Visitors will discover the island’s history, archaeological heritage, maritime traditions, art, architecture, cuisine and contemporary everyday life.
One of the most intriguing elements of the exhibition will be an interactive floor transforming into the Mediterranean Sea. Digital fish responding to visitors’ movements will allow them to literally step into the world of the Maltese sea. The exhibition will also take visitors beneath the surface – using VR technology, they will be able to explore Malta’s underwater landscapes, which make the island a popular destination for diving enthusiasts.
Flavours and scents will also play a role. In the section devoted to Maltese cuisine, an interactive table featuring recipes will introduce visitors to traditional dishes and the stories behind them. Selected areas of the exhibition will also feature scents inspired by the island – from sea breeze and rocky caves to orange blossom.
Another key element will be Malta in 360 degrees. In a dedicated room, large-scale projections will surround visitors with images of the most characteristic places in Malta and Gozo. Spatial sound, original music inspired by Maltese folklore and dynamic visuals will create the impression of being transported into the heart of the Mediterranean landscape.
The exhibition will also explore the island’s artistic and architectural heritage. An interactive panorama will allow visitors to discover its most important landmarks, while a special presentation of St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta will offer a closer look at its interior and one of Caravaggio’s greatest works, “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.”
The exhibition has been created to mark the 62nd anniversary of Malta’s independence and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malta and Poland. The organisers aim to present the island as more than just a holiday destination – as a place with a unique history, culture and heritage that can be discovered in many different ways.
